Alex Hirsch is the son of immigrants -- his mother is a first-generation immigrant from China and his father is a second-generation Jewish immigrant from Germany whose family left for the United States shortly before World War II. After his father died at a young age, Alex's mother raised him and his brother while balancing a career in state government. Alex's upbringing and family experiences instilled in him the lessons of hard work, integrity, humility, and service.
Alex's strong academic performance earned him a full-ride scholarship to UC Berkeley where he graduated with highest honors in political science and membership in the Pi Sigma Alpha honor society. Alex later earned his law degree from UC Davis School of Law. After graduating, Alex moved to West Sacramento and began a career in public service working for the California State Legislature.
Alex quickly became involved in volunteering in his community. In 2021, he was appointed to serve on the City of West Sacramento Planning Commission. Before that, he served for 3 years as Chair of the City's Transportation, Mobility, and Infrastructure Advisory Commission as the city improved the safety of roads and sidewalks, and deployed affordable mobility innovations like the on-demand Via rideshare vans and eco-friendly micromobility scooters and bicycles. Alex has also previously served on the City's Environment and Utilities Commission and the City's Age-Friendly Advisory Committee, where he helped develop the city's Age-Friendly Action Plan to improve the dignity and quality of life of the community's older residents.
Alex serves on the board of directors for the West Sacramento Friends of the Library where he engages regularly with community groups to support and spread awareness of the Library's many programs and services offered at no-cost to all community members, regardless of neighborhood or language. Alex has also been an active supporter of other community groups, including the River City Music Boosters, the Yolo County Children's Alliance, and the Bryte and Broderick Community Action Network (BBCAN).
With an active presence in his community and a genuine passion for improving the quality of life of his neighbors, Alex Hirsch is #WestSacProud.
